Doing wonders in her many radio shows, it’s difficult to realise Mika Oki’s taste in rumbles and undeniable love for sounds from across the Channel (drum and bass, UK garage, 2-step or grime) before seeing her on the dancefloor. Never hesitating to alternate a 90s dance anthem with an obscure juke track, she also gathers seemingly disparate and conflicting elements together, creating an incredible coherence. At Paradise City, Mika will share the decks with fellow Brusseleir Ojoo Gyal, who has established a mean reputation for mapping a sound uniquely hers in meticulous DJ mixes since 2019 at venues across the continents. Her DJ mixes give equal attention to the atmosphere and groove. They are a swirling cauldron of rhythms across a whole spectrum of genres, from old-school dancehall to its most futuristic and distorted mutations, twisting through dub, reggaeton, dembow, grime, breaks, and sometimes excursions into the noisy, grubby and sludgy, with illbient, musique concrète, and more. It’s controlled chaos that manages to be heavy, bouncy and sleazy simultaneously, with highly infectious enthusiasm.
